Piano Concerto on the Planets Premieres - Sky & Telescope - Sky & Telescope

A piano concerto based on the solar system's planets just had its world premiere. And you can hear a sampling of the music right here!

Move over, Gustav Holst. There's a new Planets in town. And this one is based on astronomy, not astrology.

Holst's seven-movement orchestral suite The Planets premiered in London in 1918. Now, a little more than a century later, a modern version on the theme saw first light on Sunday May 22, 2022. But while Holst turned to astrology for inspiration, composer Daniel Perttu turned to astronomy.

The chaotic early phase of the solar system

"Previous scientific studies showed that asteroids in the solar system have remained relatively unchanged since their formation, billions of years ago," study lead-author and researcher at the ETH Zurich and the NCCR PlanetS, Alison Hunt explains.

But to unlock this archive, the researchers had to thoroughly prepare and examine the extra-terrestrial material. The team took samples from 18 different iron meteorites, which were once part of the metallic cores of asteroids.

NMSU professor has alternate theory on planet formation | Las Cruces Bulletin

To give our readers a chance to experience all that our new website has to offer, we have made all content freely avaiable, through October 1, 2018.

Astronomers can’t go back in time to observe how the solar system was formed, but they can observe planets that are forming now and use computer simulations to help them better understand the process.
