NASA Reveals Bold Mission to Put Humans on Asteroid For the First Time | Nature World News

The ways near-Earth objects (NEOs) on a probable collision trajectory with Earth may be steered away, averting disastrous impact occurrences, are known as asteroid impact avoidance.

A sufficiently big asteroid or other NEO would trigger major tsunamis or numerous firestorms and an impact winter caused by the sunlight-blocking effect of large quantities of pulverized rock dust and other material pushed into the stratosphere, depending on its impact position.

House committee questions proposed delay in NASA asteroid mission - SpaceNews

WASHINGTON — Members of the House Science Committee used a hearing about the planetary science decadal survey to criticize a proposal in NASA's budget request to delay work on a space telescope to track near Earth objects (NEOs).

The fiscal year 2023 budget request, released March 28, proposed just $39.9 million for NEO Surveyor, compared to the request of $143.2 million for the mission in 2022. NASA had projected spending $174.2 million on the mission in 2023 in the runout included in its fiscal year 2022 budget request.

AstroForge aims to succeed where other asteroid mining companies have failed | Ars Technica

Asteroid mining was all the rage nearly a decade ago. In 2012 several billionaire entrepreneurs founded a company called Planetary Resources with the goal of harvesting water from asteroids and selling it as propellant at in-space fuel depots.

While it seemed like the era of space mining had dawned, these commercial efforts were soon eclipsed by a harsh reality—by 2019 both companies effectively no longer existed.

Max Q: Mines and metals – TechCrunch

Although we've long understood that asteroids are not simply the rubble of the universe, but potentially profitable stores of precious minerals, humanity has never been able to unlock this value.

To start, Astroforge will be conducting a tech demonstration mission sometime next year. The company’s already booked a spot on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare mission, and it has also contracted a deal with OrbAstro to manufacture the satellite.
