This Record-Breaking 'Gold Standard' Star Is Unlike Any We've Seen Before

Scientists have conducted an analysis of this dim object, and identified 65 separate elements. That's the most elements ever found in a single object outside the Solar System, and most of them are heavy elements from the bottom of the periodic table, rarely found in stars.

Since these elements can only form in extremely energetic events such as supernovae or neutron star mergers , via a mechanism called the rapid neutron-capture process, this star's composition could be a means to learn more about how heavy elements form.

Amalthea: Facts about Jupiter’s unusual inner moon | Space

The moon Amalthea is one of Jupiter’s 53 named satellites ; it was the first to be discovered after the four Galilean moons , and it is the fifth-largest overall.

Astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard discovered Amalthea on September 9, 1892, while astronomer Camille Flammarion suggested the name Amalthea after the Greek mythological figure.

Asteroid mining: Helping to meet Earth's natural resource demands - BBC News

Mitch Hunter-Scullion is describing a six-legged robot called Scar-e, the Space Capable Asteroid Robotic Explorer, which he aims to send to an asteroid to drill for precious metals such as iron, nickel and platinum.

As well as being increasingly essential for phones, laptops and cars, some metal-rich minerals like platinum will also be needed to help produce hydrogen as we transition to greener energy.

Europe's space agency needs your eyeballs to study a comet | CBC Radio

European space scientists are soliciting help from the public to spot signs of activity on a comet.

For two years, between 2014 and 2016, the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft caught up to comet 67P/Churyumav-Gerasimenko , also known as simply 67P. This ambitious mission was the first to rendezvous with a comet, and stay with it as it swung past the sun.

California utility regulators have a decision to make about the financing of solar projects, and so do multifamily housing property owners.

Regulators are considering greatly reduced rates for utility customers who feed solar energy to the grid. A December 2021 proposed decision by the California Public Utilities Commission would erode long-term solar cost savings and the timeline for return on investment.
