Traveling the Solar System with Pulsar Navigation - Universe Today

A team of researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have found a way for travelers through the Solar System to work out exactly where they are, without needing help from ground-based observers on Earth.

Before you can navigate a course through space, you need to know your location and orientation. Current space craft can only discover one of these things independently. It can find its orientation, or the direction in which the space craft is pointing, fairly easily.

Space animation showing the size of objects in our solar system

Objects in our solar system not only have completely different sizes, but also move at different speeds. This animation by British astronomer James O’Donoghue shows how large the planets are and how fast they rotate with respect to each other.

The smallest celestial bodies include the Moon, Pluto, and Ceres, a dwarf planet that orbits the Sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

What Does Micrometeoroid Damage do to Gossamer Structures Like Webb's Sunshield?

Tiny little bullets flood the solar system, each micrometeoroid a potential hazard. New research has found that the James Webb Space Telescope’s thin sunshields, and future inflatable spacecraft, may be at risk.

A micrometeoroid is a tiny bit of space junk usually weighing less than a gram. Some of them are the leftover bits of the countless collisions that have occurred over the past 4.5 billion years of the history of the solar system.

NT Kicking Solar Owners Off Legacy Premium Feed-In Tariff

There’s good news and bad news in this week’s NT Budget 2022 for many Northern Territory solar power system owners.

Feed-in tariffs across Australia were once generally far more generous than they are now. The higher rates were to encourage uptake of solar panels at a time when systems were quite expensive, and the approach worked very well.
