Cosmic Interceptors | StarDate Online
So scientists have been working on ways to protect us from potential impacts. If an asteroid or comet is far enough out, we might be able to nudge it into a safe orbit. If it's closer, we might have to nuke it. And a new idea is designed to save us from impacts that are weeks or even hours away.
Venus Probe Unsuccessfully Launched by Soviet Union in 1972 Is Losing Altitude; To Crash Land on ...
Every other month, we have some 'potentially hazardous' asteroid or another flying past our planet, keeping us Earthlings on our toes. But now, new accounts are suggesting that it's not an asteroid that's about to crash onto our planet, but a fifty-year-old space probe!
The Kosmos 482, renamed after it failed post-launch, was a sister spacecraft of the Venera 8. It was launched by the now-defunct Soviet Union back in 1972. Although headed for Venus, the probe couldn't manage to escape the Earth's orbit.
Six times Earth has nearly been wiped out by giant asteroids - Daily Star
According to scientists at NASA, our planet encounters a possibly world ending asteroid roughly once every 37,000 years.
While Earth has sustained several major impacts before, our planet has miraculously stood the test of time to continue regenerating itself after each asteroid hit. Here are six occasions when it really could have gone either way.
