For years, computer scientists have warned of the perils artificial intelligence (AI) poses in the future, and not just in the sensational terms of machines overthrowing humanity , but in far more insidious ways too.

These risks are not just theoretical. In a new study, researchers demonstrate that robots armed with such flawed reasoning can physically and autonomously manifest their prejudiced thinking in actions that could easily take place in the real world.

Insect-Scale Robots Emit Light When Flying - Unite.AI

A team of researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology were inspired by fireflies to create soft actuators that can emit light in different colors or patterns when flying. The artificial muscles control the wings of the flying robots, and they light up when in flight mode.

The electroluminescent soft artificial muscles could be used for a variety of applications. For example, the robots could play a role in a search-and-rescue mission, where they could find survivors and signal to other robots for help.
