PARIS (ESA PR) — The UK has secured a leading role in the development of a space telescope that will probe the atmospheres of distant worlds.
The mission – called Ariel – will study the gases that enshroud some 1000 extrasolar planets to address fundamental questions about how they formed and evolved.

New Images Using Data From Retired Telescopes Reveal Hidden Features
New images using data from European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA missions showcase the gas and dust that fill the space between stars in four of the galaxies closest to our own Milky Way.
The observations were made possible through the work of ESA's Herschel Space Observatory, which operated from 2009 to 2013.
Newly discovered star system contains 2 Earthlike planets | Space
A planetary system with two Earthlike planets has been discovered only 33 light-years away from us.
This exciting solar system is one of the nearest to Earth and was spotted by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in October 2021.
In fact, one of those two planets, called HD 260655b, about 1.2 times as big as Earth, takes only 2.8 days to orbit its star. The other, HD 260655c, which is 1.5 times Earth's size, needs 5.7 days to complete one orbit.
