Scientists Marvel at NASA Webb Telescope's New Views of the Cosmos - The New York Times

The universe was born in darkness 13.8 billion years ago, and even after the first stars and galaxies blazed into existence a few hundred million years later, these too stayed dark.

Until now. On Tuesday the James Webb Space Telescope, the most powerful space observatory yet built, offered a spectacular slide show of our previously invisible nascent cosmos. Ancient galaxies carpeting the sky like jewels on black velvet.

Japan: Research on for artificial gravity to aid astronauts in space - Science News

These experts are trying to harness Centrifugal Force to create artificial gravity. They are designing a craft that will have a component that will revolve while in space.

Gravity is something we take for granted here on Earth. It's an everyday phenomenon that doesn't dominate our daily calculus until we fall spread-eagled on the floor after a nasty slip.

Pluto's Charon sports a red cap that forms as seasons change | Space

New laboratory work shows that the color results when ultraviolet light and the solar wind interact with hydrocarbons and turn them into a soup of organic compounds dubbed tholins.

Until NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto in 2015 , little was known about Charon , which is Pluto's largest moon, with a diameter of about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers).

30 years ago, one tiny space probe's comet flybys defied all scientific expectations

Twenty years ago this week, a small spacecraft that had already taken a beating from zipping head-on in the direction of Halley's Comet at a speed of 245,000 kilometers per hour visited a second comet — and became the first spacecraft to do so.

On July 2, 1985, the European Space Agency (ESA) launched Giotto, a cylindrical one-meter-wide by two-meter-tall robotic ship carrying 10 scientific instruments, from Kourou, French Guiana, into deep space to image and take near-field measurements of Halley's Comet.

How To Anticipate A CMEs' Arrival Time - SpaceRef

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are eruptive solar events. They are often associated with solar flares and filaments.

CMEs can cause space weather events such as geomagnetic storms, high energy electron storms, hot plasma injection, ionospheric storms, and increased density in the upper atmosphere. Large CME events can impact communications, navigation systems, aviation activities, and even power grids.

Machine learning 'phones home' for famous Mar | EurekAlert!

New Curtin-led research has pinpointed the exact home of the oldest and most famous Martian meteorite for the first time ever, offering critical geological clues about the earliest origins of Mars.

Using a multidisciplinary approach involving a machine learning algorithm, the new research - published today in Nature Communications - identified the particular crater on Mars that ejected the so-called ‘Black Beauty’ meteorite, weighing 320 grams, and paired stones, which were ...

NASA's Perseverance Rover Snaps an Extreme Closeup of 10th Mars Sample - CNET

The samples will be stored in the rover's belly but, eventually, NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) will send a spacecraft to Mars to collect the cores.

What NASA hopes to find is a place that's free of rocks and slopes to make the job easier for the planned recovery of samples.

There's another ambitious Mars mission you should keep your eye on in the meantime: The Japanese space agency's MMX mission will attempt to land on Phobos, Mars' curious potato-shaped moon, and retrieve samples from its surface .
