Rocket launches can create shiny clouds far from poles, study shows | Space

While the new research suggests that increased launches from private companies like SpaceX are boosting cloud appearances, how these rockets relate to other cloud-forming factors like climate change is not quantified in the study.

“Space traffic plays an important role in the formation and variation of these clouds," lead author Michael Stevens, an atmospheric researcher at the Naval Research Laboratory, said in a NASA release (opens in new tab) July 21.

James Webb Space Telescope detects a surprise supernova | Space

The discovery is surprising as the James Webb Space Telescope wasn't built to search for supernovas; a task usually performed by large-scale survey telescopes that scan vast portions of the sky at short intervals.

Since the detection (opens in new tab) came already in the first week of Webb's science operations, astronomers think that the depth of Webb's images might actually compensate for the small area.

As more space junk falls to Earth, will China clean up its act? | China | The Guardian

In the next few days, a 23-tonne piece of rocket will plummet to Earth at about 15,000 miles an hour. Much of it may burn up on re-entry, but a significant amount will not.

It could land as one piece but more probably as many, scattered over an area up to several hundred miles across.

Did You Know That NASA was Established on This Day in 1958? | iTech Post

When it comes to space exploration, we cannot argue that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is one of the world's leading institutions. The agency is carrying the long tradition of pushing the physical and mental boundaries of humanity.

NASA is well known for pushing the frontiers of aeronautics, and for bringing the first human to the moon. The agency is responsible for the many satellites and spacecrafts that made it into space. It's also thanks to NASA that we have the International Space Station.

JWST is on the hunt for the 1st supermassive black holes | Space

Even NASA's next-generation space observatory can't manage to see supermassive black holes directly, but that doesn't mean astronomers can't use its data to better understand the mysterious behemoths.

The opportunities are even on display in the first science-quality images from the James Webb Space Telescope (nicknamed JWST or Webb) that NASA unveiled on July 12.
