Two Massive Asteroids Will Fly By This Week on July 29 and 30

The zooming rock isn’t as large as the one coming the next day, but at up to 722 feet across—taller than Seattle’s Space Needle—it sure dwarfs the 2013 asteroid event.

The magnitude of the distance, as much as seven times as far away from Earth as the Moon is, doesn’t cause alarm, but still qualifies as a near Earth object in the grand scope of the Milky Way.

Asteroids' colors, shapes and brightness levels revealed in new Gaia satellite data | Space

The Milky Way-mapping satellite Gaia has released its third catalog of data, which includes 10 times more information regarding asteroids compared with its second data catalog, indicating a rise in the number of "close encounters" between Gaia-tracked space rocks.

These close encounters can be used to assess a number of characteristics of asteroids , particularly their masses.

STRANGE double-impact asteroids- what they are | Tech News

As per the study published in the journal Icarus, scientists have observed hundreds of craters resulting from the impacts of a binary system on the red planet. Binary asteroids are just like normal asteroids but one of them revolves around the larger one just like the moon orbits earth.

The lead author of the study, Dmitrii Vavilov is quoted by the Wired as saying that these craters are really difficult to find, however, the team has been able to identify some of them based on their study.

NASA Delayed the Psyche Launch. Here's Why That's a Big Deal | WIRED

For years, Lindy Elkins-Tanton had been looking forward to blasting a probe to the metallic asteroid Psyche, which is orbiting about 230 million miles away and may be the remains of a protoplanet whose surface was smashed to bits eons ago.

But Psyche's software derailed their plan. While engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have completed the guidance, navigation, and control system, they and their colleagues at Maxar Technologies haven't been able to thoroughly test and validate it.
