US Space Force rapid capabilities office to deliver first project this year

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The U.S. Space Force's rapid development organization is on track to deliver its first system this year, a timeline that leaders say demonstrate the value of its unique role in the space acquisition ecosystem.

The Space Rapid Capabilities Office was created by Congress in fiscal 2018 to develop high-need operational prototypes as part of a push speed up space acquisition.

Jacobs—the Dallas-based engineering giant with $14 billion in revenue and a global workforce of 55,000—just landed a contract that’s out of this world.

Today Jacobs announced a new 10-year JSC Engineering, Technology, and Science II contract at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The agreement extends Jacobs’ 17-year run of supporting human space exploration at the center, as well as its 50-year partnership with NASA overall.

Amateur astronomer spots 34 paired-off 'failed' stars | Space

A citizen scientist used old telescope data to find a trove of binary star systems that include what are sometimes dubbed "failed stars."

These stars, also known as brown dwarfs , are mysterious objects with more than 12 times the mass of Jupiter and less than half the mass of the sun. Scientists have long debated whether these objects are more like stars or very large planets, and the new detections might help settle the issue.

NAM media invitation: UK panel on first JWST | EurekAlert!

The first science images from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will be made public on Tuesday 12 July. Immediately after their release, a panel of UK astronomers will respond to the images in a special media briefing at the National Astronomy Meeting (NAM 2022).

A joint NASA / ESA / Canadian Space Agency mission, JWST launched in December 2021, and is the largest telescope ever placed in space. It operates at the Lagrange 2 point, 1.5 million km from Earth and opposite the Sun.

How cold is space? Physics behind the universe's temperature | Space

Though sci-fi movies would have us believe that space is incredibly cold — even freezing — space itself isn’t exactly cold. In fact, it doesn’t actually have a temperature at all. 

Temperature is a measurement of the speed at which particles are moving, and heat is how much energy the particles of an object have. So in a truly empty region space, there would be no particles and radiation, meaning there’s also no temperature.
