At Google, robots go to school and learn using AI algorithms - The Washington Post

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Researchers here at Google's lab recently asked a robot to build a burger out of various plastic toy ingredients.

The mechanical arm knew enough to add ketchup after the meat and before the lettuce, but thought the right way to do so was to put the entire bottle inside the burger.

Trojans Win Student Design Contest with Autonomous Robots that 'Learn' - USC Viterbi | ...

The students’ research imagines a future where rovers could work in teams on remote planets far from home. Photo/iStock.

Four USC Viterbi students' award-winning research imagines a near future where this is possible, using an up-and-coming technology called edge computing. This method, which forfeits centralized servers, allows autonomous robots to process everything they see or do on the spot.

Using tactile sensors and machine learning to improve how robots manipulate fabrics

In recent years, roboticists have been trying to improve how robots interact with different objects found in real-world settings. While some of their efforts yielded promising results, the manipulation skills of most existing robotic systems still lag behinds those of humans.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute have recently proposed a new computational technique that could allow robots to better understand and handle fabrics.

Before the iRobot acquisition, Massachusetts was already at the forefront of all things robots - ...

It was just after the dot-com boom had gone bust. Mountz had run warehouses for a failed e-commerce company, WebVan. His next idea was to design machines that could speed up the process of collecting all the items needed for warehouse orders.

But everyone he wanted to hire, it seemed, was in Massachusetts, home to a collection of university robotics labs, defense contractors, and a few pioneering companies such as iRobot and Boston Dynamics (both started by Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers).
