We caught up with Robert Griesmer, who is retiring as executive director and chief operating officer of the Virginia Air & Space Science Center. His job, he said, has been more hands-on than people realize.

Flying saucer-shaped cloud floats above Hawaiian telescopes | Space

The Gemini Observatory on the Big Island of Hawai'i recently experienced a "close encounter" from a cloud that some folks associate with unidentified flying objects (UFOs), but the real explanation is far less alien. (It's never about aliens , actually.)

Lenticular clouds, sometimes called "UFO clouds," form when fast winds crash into the side of a mountain or other tall structure, according to the National Weather Service (opens in new tab) .

Perseid meteor shower 2022 thrills stargazers despite bright moon | Space

The Perseid meteor shower of the 2022 reached its peak this weekend and while the bright full moon may have washed out the best of the "shooting stars" display this year, that doesn't mean skywatchers were left completely in the dark.

Stargazers around the world captured some dazzling views of the Perseid meteor shower as it peaked overnight Friday and Saturday (Aug. 12-13) and they shared the photos to prove it.

Canadian Space Agency's Strato-Science 2022 Campaign takes to the skies | The Daily Press

A group of undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Toronto launched a balloon into the stratosphere this past week at the Timmins stratospheric balloon base.

It was the first launch of the Canadian Space Agency's (CSA) Strato-Science 2022 campaign, which will feature four balloons carrying six payloads to conduct various science experiments.

Florida's 5th graders took the 2022 statewide science exam to measure understanding of the state's science standards, but the results were stagnant to dismal.

Only 48 percent of 5th graders passed the exam, based on a score of 3 or higher. The Florida Department of Education considers that "satisfactory—may need additional support for the next grade/course."

Apart from being a NASA astronaut, geologist, aquanaut and former international rugby player, Watkins is the first Black woman scheduled to complete an International Space Station long-term mission.

3rd Chinese space station module arrives at spaceport | Space

China is gearing up to complete its Tiangong space station with a third module launch in less than 18 months.

The Mengtian experiment module arrived at Wenchang spaceport in south China on Tuesday (Aug. 9) after being shipped in containers from the northern port city of Tianjin, China’s human spaceflight agency announced (opens in new tab) .

Venus sulfur clouds mystery solved by computer model | Space

Scientists using new computational methods have come up with a new insight into the potential workings of the complex atmosphere of Venus.

Venus is shrouded in thick clouds made up mostly of sulfuric acid. These clouds reflect most of the sunlight shining on the planet, making it the brightest object in the sky after the sun and moon .
