Pulsar Planets Are Exceedingly Rare - Eos

"One of the main things about pulsar planets is we don't actually know how to get a planet around a pulsar," said Iuliana Nițu, a doctoral student at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and lead researcher on the new survey.

If another object—a neutron star, a white dwarf, a black hole, or, in rare cases, a planet—orbits the pulsar, the object's gravitational pull can subtly change the timing of the pulsing.

A new chapter in the search for alien planets

The big picture: Understanding the chemical compositions of newly formed planets, their stars and disks of gas and dust around young stars will help researchers learn more about the likelihood for habitability in various star systems.

Yes, but: Understanding habitability in general is about more than chemical composition, mass and position in orbit.

Stars Can Strip Neptune-sized Planets To Their Rocky Cores - SpaceRef

Artist's concept of a Neptune-sized planet, left, around a blue, A-type star.

Over the last 25 years, astronomers have found thousands of exoplanets around stars in our galaxy, but more than 99% of them orbit smaller stars — from red dwarfs to stars slightly more massive than our sun, which is considered an average-sized star.

How can we help humans thrive trillions of years from now?

Let's say you're hiking, and you drop a piece of glass on the trail. Eventually someone will walk along the trail and might cut themselves on the glass.

In the book, MacAskill explains why today's humans need to figure out how to minimize the harm that global threats such as pandemics, biowarfare, climate change or nuclear disaster could have on future humans.
