CHIPS Act Advances DOD's Emphasis on Microelectronics > U.S.

Maxar to aid L3Harris in tracking missiles from space

WASHINGTON — Maxar Technologies will build 14 spacecraft platforms for L3Harris Technologies as part of a Pentagon program for tracking missile threats, including from hypersonic systems, Maxar announced Tuesday.

The Space Development Agency announced last month that L3Harris and Northrop Grumman had each won a contract to produce 14 satellites for the Tranche 1 Tracking Layer in low Earth orbit. These satellites are designed to warn of and track missiles launches.

NASA Seeks Student Experiments to Soar in Second TechRise Challenge

WASHINGTON , Aug. 10, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- NASA is calling on middle and high school students to join the second NASA TechRise Student Challenge, which invites student teams to develop, build, and launch science and technology experiments on high-altitude balloons.

Students in grades six to 12 attending U.S. public, private, or charter schools – including those in U.S. territories – are challenged to team up with their schoolmates to design an experiment under the guidance of an educator.

Russia Fires Iranian Satellite Into Space, Prompting Spying Concerns

This is the moment Russia launched an Iranian space satellite that U.S. officials believe could allow Iran to spy on its neighbors in the Middle East and help Russia in Ukraine.

The Russian Soyuz rocket carried a remote sensing satellite called Khayyam from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in southern Kazakhstan on August 9, blasting off at 8:52 a.m. local time.

Halifax space program gets $485K to urge diverse young people to study the stars | CBC News

A Halifax-based space engineering initiative wants to bring young people from diverse backgrounds into the space industry — and after recently being awarded nearly half a million dollars in funding, organizers say they plan to expand the program.

"I would love to see our program go national. We can bring this model and actually apply it to other provinces throughout the country," said Arad Gharagozli, CEO of GALAXIA Mission Systems, a local space systems company, and co-founder of the free ATLAS program.
