A NASA Spacecraft Will Collide With an Asteroid | Time

D imorphos is easily one of the least interesting objects in the solar system. It’s a rock—a moonlet, really—measuring just 160 m (525 ft.) across, orbiting the asteroid Didymos, which itself measures only 780 m (2,560 ft). Located 11 million km (6.8 million mi.

But on Monday, Sept. 26 at precisely 7:14 p.m. ET, the attention of much of the astronomical community will be directed at Dimorphos.

Alert! 160-foot wide scary asteroid is zooming towards the Earth today; know strike chance?

The Earth has been playing hide-and-seek with asteroids for a while now. But it doesn't always win. In March, an asteroid named 2022 EB5 crashed into the planet north of Iceland in a remote coastal area.

The reason NASA is able to predict and report on asteroids that are about to approach us not just today but months later is because of a very special telescope known as the NEOWISE (Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer).

Dinosaurs Were Already on Their Way Out Before Asteroid Hit, Another Study Finds : ScienceAlert

But now another study suggests dinosaurs were already on their way out millions of years before the fated meteorite hit, according to an analysis of over 1,000 fossilized eggshells unearthed in central China.

"Dinosaurs went extinct gradually over millions of years, instead of coming to an abrupt end from sudden disasters," study author Qiang Wang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences told the South China Morning Post .

DART: Why a NASA spacecraft will crash into an asteroid

SpaceX provided a ride into space for NASA's DART mission, the first attempt to test out an Earth protection plan from asteroids by crashing a spacecraft into one.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - In the first-of-its kind, save-the-world experiment, NASA is about to clobber a small, harmless asteroid millions of miles away.

NASA's unprecedented DART mission will intentionally slam a spacecraft into an asteroid next week

A golf cart-sized spacecraft will intentionally smash into a tiny asteroid at about 14,000 miles per hour on September 26. It's humanity's first test of our ability to deflect dangerous incoming space rocks.

"I'm highly confident that we are going to hit on Monday and that there will be a complete success," Lindley Johnson, NASA's first planetary defense officer, told reporters at a press conference on Thursday.

NASA is crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid to test a plan that could one day save Earth from ...

(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.)

The large binary asteroid Didymos and its moonlet Dimorphos currently pose no threat to Earth.

I am a scholar who studies space and international security, and it is my job to ask what the likelihood really is of an object crashing into the planet – and whether governments are spending enough money to prevent such an event.

One NASA asset will be critical to Moon and asteroid missions' success

The Deep Space Network (DSN) listens to more than 40 missions in our Solar System , including the Voyager spacecraft adrift in interstellar space.

These messages will track two of the most important missions NASA will perform this year: The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which will slam a spacecraft into an asteroid in hopes of changing its path, and the Artemis I rocket launch, which will investigate technology that might soon ...
