NASA's Battering Ram Now Has Asteroid It'll Smash in Its Sights
Now, as its Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft bears down on its target, the binary asteroid system Didymos — a pair of space rocks classified as "potentially hazardous" near-Earth objects — are now officially in its sights .
The small capsule is scheduled to impact with a tiny moonlet dubbed Dimorphos, a small natural satellite of the larger Didymos asteroid, on September 26.
Which Asteroid Will Pass by Earth Today?
Asteroids and their movements past Earth have increased significantly as NASA monitored the rise in asteroid flybys, which has become a worrisome sign for scientists.
NASA reported that Asteroid 2022 QB22 would simply pass the Earth on September 9, Friday, at a distance of approximately 5.4 million kilometres as it flies at the speed of 63,000 kilometres per hour.

At a telephone news conference on Thursday, NASA officials announced two potential launch windows: Sept. 23 from 6:47 a.m. to 8:47 a.m. Eastern time and Sept. 27 from 11:37 a.m. to 12:47 p.m.
The World Is Not Ready For The Next Super-Eruption, Scientists Warn : ScienceAlert
Earth came pre-loaded with plenty of dangers long before we began piling on, some of which our species has still barely experienced.
That makes sense, and humans are wisely preparing in ways the dinosaurs couldn't, with investments in asteroid monitoring and even deflection .

“At 09.46 GMT on the morning of 11 September, in the exceptionally beautiful summer of the year 2077, most of the inhabitants of Europe saw a dazzling fireball appear in the eastern sky.
Watch 'Incredibly Bright' Fireball Streak Across New York and Connecticut
A blazing fireball lit up the skies over northeast U.S. states including New York and Connecticut on Friday, September 2, with multiple people capturing the event on video.
A fireball is the name given to a particularly bright meteor, which itself is a space rock that has slammed into Earth's atmosphere at such high speed that heat from air resistance envelops the asteroid in a bright flame that can be seen for miles.
