NASA is going to try to change the path of an asteroid in hopes of being able to save Earth from destruction some day.

First off, NASA wants us to know that currently there are no asteroids heading toward Earth. For this experiment on trying to change the path of an asteroid, they have picked out an asteroid they can observe but poses no threat to Earth.

Crime-scene technique identifies asteroid sites -- ScienceDaily

Analysing the charred remains of plants can confirm the locations of asteroid strikes in the distant past, new research shows.

Based on estimates of crater-producing asteroid strikes in the last 11,650 years (known as the Holocene), only about 30% of impact sites have been located.

Huge asteroid twice the size of Big Ben set to smash into Earth's orbit this month - Daily Star

Given the catch name of 2008 RW , the giant space rock only comes close to earth once ever three or four years.

But its latest flyby is going to be closer than ever before – and it looks set to crash into our orbit.

A Post-Impact Deep Freeze for Dinosaurs - Eos

The long-term environmental consequences of this, or any future, asteroid impact remain foggy, but new fingerprints from atmospheric sulfur help cut through the haze.

In 1980, geologist Walter Alvarez and his father, Luis, a Nobel Prize–winning physicist, first proposed that a collision with an extraterrestrial object wiped out the dinosaurs.

Watch NASA slam a spacecraft into an asteroid

DART, which stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, will slam a small spacecraft into a moonlet known as Dimorphos orbiting a near-Earth asteroid called Didymos. NASA hopes to redirect Dimorphos' orbit with the maneuver.

Monday, September 12 at 9 a.m. EDT NASA will host a hybrid media day at its Applied Physics Lab. The event will showcase the technology making NASA's DART test possible. NASA says it will share more about the event closer to the date, but that's all we know for now.
