EXPLAINER: Why a NASA spacecraft will crash into an asteroid
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — In the first-of-its kind, save-the-world experiment, NASA is about to clobber a small, harmless asteroid millions of miles away.
A spacecraft named Dart will zero in on the asteroid Monday, intent on slamming it head-on at 14,000 mph (22,500 kph).

But according to new research from the University of Rochester , the impactor may have been much bigger—and would have had devastating consequences across the planet.
"Understanding the largest impact structure that we have on Earth is critical," says Natalie Allen '20, now a PhD student at John Hopkins University.
NASA to slam DART spacecraft into asteroid
NASA is planning to slam a spacecraft into an asteroid in the hopes of redirecting its orbit as part of a future plan for planetary defense.
NASA researchers have waited nearly a year since SpaceX launched their Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission in November of 2021 to determine if a spacecraft can collide with a guinea pig asteroid to knock it off its course.

I am a scholar who studies space and international security, and it is my job to ask what the likelihood really is of an object crashing into the planet – and whether governments are spending enough money to prevent such an event.

The thought of an asteroid striking the earth and wreaking havoc might keep people awake at night. But scientists are working on a way to prevent this from happening by playing a sort of interplanetary game of pool.
The idea is to use the kinetic energy of a spacecraft to deflect these potential earthbound asteroids. NASA's DART Mission, which stands for "Double Asteroid Redirection Test," is set to hit its target on Sept. 26.
