Asteroid watch: Gigantic 1640 foot space rock just flew past Earth | Tech News

Although NASA has successfully completed its first asteroid deflection test, there is no way as of yet to determine whether the asteroid was actually deflected off its path. The space agency will determine that using the data collected during and after the collision.

According to a report from experts at Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of Russia's Academy of Sciences, Asteroid 2022 SE37 is nearly 1640 feet wide, which roughly translates to half a kilometer. That is bigger than even the Roman Colosseum!

Space telescopes capture asteroid slam with striking clarity

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The world now has stunning new photos of this week's asteroid strike, the first planetary defense test of its kind.

NASA on Thursday released pictures of the dramatic event taken by the Hubble and Webb space telescopes.

Telescopes on all seven continents watched as NASA's Dart spacecraft slammed Monday into the harmless space rock, 7 million miles (11 million kilometers) from Earth, in hopes of altering its orbit.

News of the Week: Asteroid Adventures, Hallmark Movies, and the Dangers of the Five-Second Rule | ...

I played Asteroids a lot in the mid-'80s, at the mall arcade and at the local bowling alley. The goal is to maneuver your little triangle-shaped ship through space while zapping and breaking up the many asteroids that are coming toward you.

NASA did something similar this week, sending a vending machine-sized spacecraft named DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) into the large Dimorphos asteroid . It wasn't to destroy it like a video game, it was simply to push it.
