How do we know distant planets are Earth-like?

To work this out, scientists first measure the planet's radius as it passes in front of a star, which allows them to estimate its size. To work out its mass, they look at how much the planet's orbit causes the star to 'wiggle'.

The next step is to see whether the planet is temperate, with a climate mild enough to support liquid water on the surface. This is revealed by the amount of light a planet receives, along with its orbit.

TFAW survey II: 6 Newly Validated Planets And 13 Planet Candidates From K2 - Astrobiology

The TFAW survey is an ongoing project that aims to re-analyze all light curves in K2 C1-C8 and C12-C18 campaigns with a wavelet-based detrending and denoising method, and the period search algorithm TLS to search for new transit candidates not detected in previous works.

We have analyzed a first subset of 24 candidate planetary systems around relatively faint host stars (10.9 < Kp < 15.4) to allow for follow-up speckle imaging observations.

Student uses NASA data to reveal new details on planets in other solar systems

Jared Siegel, B.S. '22, spent six months analyzing data taken by a NASA spacecraft.

"As the results kept taking shape, they just got more exciting," said Siegel, who graduated this spring.

The results of the research for Siegel's undergraduate thesis have been published in The Astronomical Journal .

Simple laser system could help astronomers find new planets on the cheap | E&T Magazine

A system for finding new, Earth-like planets using a simple laser has been developed by researchers at Heriot-Watt University.

The laser emits light at one billion pulses per second and comprises just two mirrors and a sapphire crystal containing a small amount of titanium.
