15 Miles in Diameter – Asteroid That Formed Earth's Largest Crater Bigger Than Previously Believed

By University of Rochester October 14, 2022 The new research indicates that the impactor would have to be about 20 to 25 kilometers (12.4 to 15.5 miles) in size and move at a velocity of 15 to 20 kilometers (9.3 to 12.4 miles) per second.

If the Vredefort crater was even larger and the impact more energetic than that which formed the Chicxulub crater, the Vredefort impact may have caused even more catastrophic global consequences.

Here’s hoping for an asteroid to wipe us all out and save us from Trump and Orbán – ...

Terrible news from deep space, where NASA fired a small craft into the path of an asteroid, thereby throwing it off course and showing that in the future, humanity could be saved from being wiped out should another massive space rock be headed this way.

At this point, the planet being destroyed by an asteroid seems like one of the better options, such is the appalling state of affairs.

John Wheeler: NASA did not actually blow up an asteroid - InForum | Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo ...

FARGO — Thanks to careless reporting and equally careless interpretation of news on social media, there is a lot of misconception regarding NASA's asteroid deflection.

What the DART rocket did was crash into Dimorphos so as to deflect it measurably. Its regular revolution around its twin, Didymos, made the deflection easy to measure.

DART 'succeeded in altering asteroid path' | The Inverell Times | Inverell, NSW

The $US330 million ($A521 million) proof-of-concept mission, which was seven years in development, also marked the world's first test of a planetary defence system designed to prevent a potential doomsday meteorite collision with earth.

Measurements showed the target asteroid was bumped slightly closer to the larger parent asteroid it orbits in space and that its orbital period was shortened by 32 minutes.
