Method for decoding asteroid interiors could help aim asteroid-deflecting missions | MIT News | ...

NASA hit a bullseye in late September with DART, the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, which flew a spacecraft straight at the heart of a nearby asteroid. The one-way kamikaze mission smashed into the stadium-sized space rock and successfully reset the asteroid's orbit.

Now MIT researchers have a tool that may improve the aim of future asteroid-targeting missions.

Dangerous asteroid 2022 RB5 moving towards Earth at 19152 kmph TODAY, warns NASA | Tech News

It appears that the Earth cannot possibly escape from the constant onslaught of asteroids. Lately, we have been witnessing an increased number of asteroids making their way towards the Earth.

However, the prediction by NASA at the moment is that there is very little chance that 2022 RB5 will strike the Earth. It is expected that the asteroid will make a safe passage. However, various instruments will be monitoring it till it is at a safe distance from us.

Hubble shows view of 'unexpected' twin tail created by asteroid impact mission | News | kq2.com

Two tails of dust ejected from the Didymos-Dimorphos asteroid system are visible in an image from the Hubble Space Telescope, showing the aftermath of the DART mission's impact with Dimorphos.

The Hubble Space Telescope captured a new snapshot of the asteroid that NASA recently slammed with a spacecraft in an attempt to knock it off course, and the image reveals the clearest look yet at some unexpected results from the mission — a twin tail of dust trailing behind the asteroid system.

This GIGANTIC asteroid is spinning FASTER, creating a big worry for astrologers | Tech News

A potentially dangerous asteroid has left scientists' worried with its rising spin rate. The near-Earth asteroid Phaethon is spinning faster and faster. A recent study led by a team of researchers has detected the asteroid's rotational period is decreasing by 4 milliseconds per year.

1. 3200 Phaethon is an asteroid 5 kilometers in diameter. The asteroid is rotating faster and faster on its axis, at the rate of about 4 milliseconds per year.

Homewood-Flossmoor alum part of team that altered orbit of asteroid - CBS Chicago

Last month, NASA successfully launched a spacecraft into an asteroid millions of miles away, altering the course of its orbit.

The test could provide scientists with a blueprint for saving the earth from asteroid strikes in the future.

CBS 2's Marybel Gonzalez went to Homewood-Flossmoor High School where the engineer graduated 35 years ago.

NASA Sees 'Stunning Surprise' as Smashed Asteroid Grows a Twin Tail - CNET

Hubble has revisited the asteroid system multiple times since the impact. The data shows the second tail formed sometime between Oct. 2 and Oct. 8. "The twin tail is an unexpected development, although similar behavior is commonly seen in comets and active asteroids," said NASA.
