Space Development Agency is now officially part of the Space Force - SpaceNews

WASHINGTON — The Space Development Agency, formed inside the Pentagon in 2019 to help accelerate the use of commercial space technology, was officially transferred to the U.S. Space Force on Oct. 1.

Congress mandated the transfer in the 2021 National Defense Authorization Act due to concerns that there are too many organizations running space programs.

Sixteen Orbital Launches Conducted in September – Parabolic Arc

There were 16 orbital launches worldwide in September, averaging one liftoff every 45 hours. The month was tied with July for second highest total this year. There were 18 launches in August.

Chinese companies launched eight times, American companies six times, and Europe and Russia conducted one launch apiece. Russia’s launch of a new crew to the International Space Station (ISS) was the highlight of the month.

NRO partners with commercial space firms on signal detection tech

WASHINGTON — The National Reconnaissance Office awarded study contracts today to six commercial space companies to explore the potential of satellite radio frequency detection to meet military intelligence needs.

The NRO, charged with designing, launching and operating U.S. spy satellites, issued the Sept. 28 awards as part of a broader effort called Strategic Commercial Enhancement, which aims to better leverage commercial space capabilities alongside the bespoke systems it has traditionally developed.

Tasmanian startup creates edge computing software to locate and monitor astronaut fatigue and ...

A Tasmanian-created software which will enable stress, fatigue and other physiological responses in astronauts to be monitored as they travel in space will eventually be developed for use on the International Space Station.

Creation of the software began with the help of the state government's Space Technology Seed Fund, which has just reopened for a second round of grants worth between $25,000 and $100,000.

Europe unveils 'urgent' plan for space-based solar power

The concept of harvesting the Sun's energy in space and beaming it back down to Earth has been discussed for decades, with the US government granting the Department of Energy and Nasa $50 million between 1978 and 1986 to investigate how feasible it would be.

There have since been major advances in high-efficiency solar cells, wireless power transmission and robotic in-orbit assembly that have led several national space agencies to renew interest in the idea.

Bold new space policy on cards
