MINNEAPOLIS — The nights are getting longer and darker, but brilliant Jupiter provides a beacon until well into the morning hours.
The king of planets comes out in the east at nightfall and dominates the sky. West of Jupiter shines Saturn, and above the ringed planet the Summer Triangle of stars still rides high. A waxing moon passes Saturn between Oct. 4 and Oct. 5 and Jupiter between Oct. 7 and Oct. 8.
Two "Super Mercury" Exoplanets Found in a Single System - Universe Today
There’s a star system out there with three super-Earth planets and two super-Mercuries. Super-Earths are fairly familiar types of exoplanets, but super-Mercuries are rare. Those are planets with the same composition as our own Mercury, but larger and denser.
A team of researchers at the Instituto de Astrofisica e Ciencias do Espaco in Portugal discovered these two dense inner planets. Their study is focused on small exoplanets and their compositions, and how position, temperature, and the properties of their stars affect them.
New theory predicts Earth-like, watery planets exist around red dwarfs
They have developed a new planet formation model and, thereby, have predicted the amounts of seawater that exoplanets orbiting M-type stars would have.
Since the first detection in 1995, more than 5,000 planets orbiting stars other than the sun (exoplanets) have been detected. The detection of such a large number of exoplanets has shown that planetary systems exist commonly in the universe.
