In the murky waters of Lake Ontario just off the Toronto harbor, a stream of trash inches toward a round, tubular-looking device floating in the water. A piece of white styrofoam bumps up against the device's lip. Then, in one fluid motion, it tumbles over the edge.
"It's basically like a floating trash can," says Chelsea Rochman, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Toronto, who has worked with a team at the university to capture trash in Lake Ontario with bins like these since 2019.
Storage Robots: What Are They?
Storing data on several external hard drives can be inconsistent and time-consuming with the increasing accumulation of terabytes of data.
While not a robot in the traditional sense of the word, a storage robot eliminates the need to manually manage data by allowing you to add or change drives automatically when additional storage is required.
Robots at work may prompt burnout — but aren't replacing people yet | HR Dive
"Most people are overestimating the capabilities of robots and underestimating their own capabilities," one researcher said.
Robots in the workplace may contribute to employee burnout and workplace incivility — and while these effects can be mitigated, according to an American Psychological Association study released Oct.
The Army's Big Convention Was Full of Armed Robots - Defense One
The U.S. Army may still be working out rules and concepts for using armed unmanned vehicles, but a wide variety were already on sale at this week's Association of the U.S. Army show.
It's "[s]omething I was told back at AUSA's of yore that companies would 'never' sell," observed Peter Singer, a strategist at New America who has written books on technology and security.
Tech companies and the future of weaponized robots - Vox
A group of robot makers recently declared that they're against the "weaponization" of their robots.
These kinds of videos are all over the internet . They demonstrate the kind of scary scenarios that six top robot manufacturers, including Boston Dynamics, probably had in mind when they published a letter last week promising not to weaponize their products.

Robots-as-a-Service: 3 Ways Manufacturers Can Increase Productivity with Low Upfront Cost
Automation is a vast scope of technologies that work to reduce the interaction of humans in processes. Instead of workers performing a task or handling machinery, an automated system runs on its own.
Understanding the many benefits that automation can offer workers, companies, and the U.S. economy, Formic Technologies is working to speed the rate of adoption in the manufacturing sector.
Robots Monitor Environmental Impact of Nord Stream Gas Leak | Manufacturing Business Technology
The expedition with R/V Skagerak was not the only measure the university's researchers took when the Nord Stream pipelines began to leak methane gas. With the help of the Voice of the Ocean foundation, VOTO, three remote-controlled underwater robots were placed in the area.
"They are called gliders and are provided by VOTO, who also manages their operation. The robots can give us measurements over a series of time about how the chemistry and quality of the water is affected by the natural gas leak", says oceanographer Bastien Queste at the University of Gothenburg.
