Looking up into the night sky, it can be difficult to comprehend the vastness of the space that surrounds the Earth — and the impressive size of the various stellar and planetary bodies on display.
Although most stars are much larger than planets, there are some planets that boast impressive size as well.
Do Astronomers Exist on Other Habitable Planets? - The Debrief
Recently, I gave a keynote lecture about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence at the International Forum on Consciousness in Madison, Wisconsin.
While visiting the observatory with Bill, it occurred to me that 13.8 billion years ago, the early universe started as a hot soup of elementary particles and radiation, but no sentient beings with consciousness to reflect on it.
Nasa 'hexoplanets' account starts tweeting spooky planets
Take HD 189733b for instance. A cobalt blue gas giant just slightly larger than Jupiter orbiting close to its star around 64 light years from Earth.
Then there's the skeleton planet whose star is stripping the flesh from its bones, another gas giant known as HD 209458 b.
A single star has three super-Earths — and two rare super-Mercuries

Discovery Alert: Ultra-hot 'Super-Earth' Could Have No Atmosphere – Exoplanet Exploration: Planets ...
Illustration of the terrestrial super-Earth GJ 1252 b, which lies approximately 65 light-years from Earth. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech
The discovery: GJ 1252 b, a rocky, terrestrial "super-Earth" discovered in 2020, has been given a closer look and astronomers have found that the exoplanet could have a very minimal atmosphere or possibly no atmosphere at all.
See Mercury shine bright while far from the sun on Saturday (Oct. 8) | Space
In the northern hemisphere on Saturday morning (Oct 8.), Mercury will appear in the sky with its disc half lit by the sun. This intermediate phase between the tiny planet being fully lit and totally dark is called 'Mercury at dichotomy.'
Mercury would often be difficult to see in the sky because it lies so close to the sun . This proximity means that glare from our star hides the glow from the solar system 's smallest planet.
A Migrating Moon Might Have Turned Uranus Over on its Side - Universe Today
There are plenty of interesting things about Uranus. Its season lasts as long as its day, it’s the second least-dense planet, and it has a collection of 27 moons.
A flurry of research into the orbital mechanics of the gas giants has been underway lately. That flurry helped to point out a series of flaws in our current model of what happened to Uranus.
