Astronomers Spot the Debris From Planets That Formed 10 Billion Years ago - Universe Today

The fate of the Sun is sealed. It was sealed by gravity in the earliest days of its formation. In several billion years the Sun will swell to a red giant, cast off much of its thin outer layers, then collapse to become a white dwarf.

White dwarfs are interesting objects. They form when their gravitational weight is balanced by the quantum pressure of electrons . They don’t experience any nuclear fusion or gravitational heating, so once formed they just gradually cool down.

View planets, winter constellations at Observatory open house: Indiana University Kokomo

Learn more about neutrinos — tiny, nearly massless particles that travel at near light speeds — and how they are studied at the Indiana University Kokomo Observatory’s free monthly open house Sunday, November 13.

Patrick Motl, professor of physics, will begin the evening at 7 p.m. with a presentation about neutrino astronomy, which allows for observation of astronomical objects with neutrino detectors in special observatories.

New Study Finds Debris Of 10-billion-year-old Planets in Milky Way Galaxy

A group of astronomers, led by the University of Warwick, has claimed that they have discovered the oldest star in the Milky Way galaxy. Ruins from planetesimals in orbit are being absorbed by the oldest rocky and icy planetary systems which astronomers have now discovered.

The group of astronomers created a simulation of two unique white dwarfs that were observed by the European Space Agency's GAIA space observatory for this study.

Solar panel discovery paves way for exploration of distant planets

A team from the University of Cambridge proposed an ultra-thin photovoltaic cell design that can tolerate irradiation in space that causes damage and lowers efficiency of conventional solar cell materials.

This means it would be possible to deploy them in higher orbits around the Earth, such as the Molniya orbit that passes through the centre of our planet's proton radiation belt.
