A city on an asteroid? It's possible according to University of Rochester researchers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A city built on an asteroid. Tt's the stuff of science fiction, but according to a "wildly theoretical" study by the University of Rochester, we might be closer than we think (in some ways) to it being possible.

"Many of the materials do exist in one form or another. The biggest difficulty is getting those materials used at the scale that we’re looking for," said Peter Miklavčič a Ph.D. candidate in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rochester and one of the brains behind the project.

Everything scientists would want to know if an asteroid was heading toward Earth

An asteroid that struck Earth 66 million years triggered a megatsunami that wiped many of the dinosaurs

Small asteroids crash into Earth all the time, but what would happen in the rare occurrence that an asteroid bigger than a bus survived an encounter with Earth’s atmosphere?

Deflection of a near-Earth asteroid by DART is the Physics World 2022 Breakthrough of the Year ...

In choosing the Physics World Breakthrough of the Year for 2022, one of the toughest decisions we had to make related to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The deployment of the telescope was a huge achievement, and its first images were stunning.

Sure, simple Newtonian mechanics makes it clear that nudging an asteroid out of its orbit is perfectly possible in principle.

'Alien' minerals never found on Earth identified in meteorite

A pockmarked ruddy red boulder sat for many years on the edge of the town El Ali in Somalia, near a popular well where herders and their animals gather to slake their thirst.

Known as the El Ali meteorite, the hunk of metal plunged through Earth's atmosphere at some unknown date in the past. It brought with it at least three minerals not found naturally on Earth, scientists recently announced.

Geminid meteor shower peak: When and where you can see it

We call them shooting stars, but it's actually meteors that create dazzling streaks of light across our night sky.

The Geminids occur when the Earth makes its annual passage through the path of a comet-like asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. That path is littered with bits and pieces that have broken off of 3200 Phaethon.
