NEO Surveyor is the first purpose-built space telescope that will advance NASA's planetary defense efforts by finding and tracking hazardous near-Earth objects.
A space telescope designed to search for the hardest-to-find asteroids and comets that stray into Earth's orbital neighborhood, NASA's Near-Earth Object Surveyor ( NEO Surveyor ) recently passed a rigorous technical and programmatic review .
Research site will bounce radio signal off asteroid in NASA experiment
"What's new and what we are trying to do is probe asteroid interiors with long wavelength radars and radio telescopes from the ground," said Mark Haynes, lead investigator on the project and a radar systems engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
Knowing more about an asteroid's interior, especially of an asteroid large enough to cause major damage on Earth, is important for determining how to defend against it.

This year, scientists used lasers to harness solar power. NASA released stunning images from the James Webb Telescope and moved an asteroid off its course.
Early results from NASA's DART mission
Continued observations of that evolving ejecta have given the investigation team better understanding of what the DART spacecraft achieved at the impact site.
"What we can learn from the DART mission is all part of a NASA's overarching work to understand asteroids and other small bodies in our solar system ," said Tom Statler, the program scientist for DART at NASA headquarters in Washington, and one of the presenters at the briefing.
9 Kathua students get first-hand experience of NASA global asteroid search campaign – The ...
JAMMU: In the first, nine students of a private school in Kathua district participated in a global asteroid search campaign as part of NASA’s citizen science project.
The campaign was organised by Delhi-based Homi Lab in association with the International Astronomical search collaboration (IASC) from October 21 to November 15, Homi Lab said in a press release here.
2022: a space yearbook - The Verge
It was a good year for space. NASA finally got its long-anticipated Moon rocket off the ground, SpaceX beat its annual record for space launches in July, and JWST continued to bring us picture after picture of the wonders of the cosmos.
That's not to say everything ran smoothly — there were definitely some big bumps in the road — but space research, observation, and industry all had huge years nonetheless. And even in a year as full of progress and innovation as this one, some projects really set themselves apart.
Most Metal Moment of 2022: 'Russian warship, go f*** yourself'
On the first day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a group of guards defending a small island in the Black Sea received an ultimatum from a Russian cruiser: Surrender or get struck by a missile.
Many see the moment as a perfect metaphor for the conflict between Russia's powerful war machine and the smaller, less well-equipped Ukrainian army.
Intense meteor brightens Southcentral Alaska's winter solstice - Alaska Public Media
The winter solstice may be short on sunlight, but Alaskans saw a different kind of illumination Wednesday from a falling meteor seen across Southcentral Alaska.
At about 5:45 a.m., quite a few Alaskans reported they were woken up by a bright flash of light. Some Mat-Su Valley residents said they thought there were high-powered headlights in their driveways.
Growing Population | StarDate Online
The solar system is undergoing a population explosion. It's not adding new members — they've been here all along. But astronomers are finding more of them.
Almost all of the newly counted are small chunks of rock and ice. Most are in the asteroid belt — a band of rocky debris between Mars and Jupiter. Astronomers are actually searching for bodies that come close to Earth — potential threats to our planet.
