It's been a triumphant year for the James Webb Space Telescope.
Editors of the journal Science selected the James Webb Space Telescope from a pool of candidates, which also included NASA's asteroid-deflection mission DART , as the Science Breakthrough of 2022.
In a statement (opens in new tab) accompanying the announcement, Science praised Webb for allowing researchers to reveal the universe 's "unfathomable past in stunning, unprecedented detail."
Nuclear fusion: What does it mean for space exploration? | Space
The announcement this week of fusion ignition is a major scientific advancement, one that is decades in the making. More energy was produced than the laser energy used to spark the first controlled fusion triumph.
The nuclear fusion feat has broad implications, fueling hopes of clean, limitless energy. As for space exploration, one upshot from the landmark research is attaining the long-held dream of future rockets that are driven by fusion propulsion.

Jupiter moons take center stage in bonus science from Juno | Space
In 2016, while doing routine testing of NASA's Juno spacecraft, the mission team discovered that parts of the engine weren't working the way they expected.
The spacecraft, which had arrived at Jupiter in July 2016, was orbiting the giant planet every 53 days and due to accelerate, shortening that period to 14 days.
New study sheds light on a new type of aurora called a space hurricane - The Washington Post
Last year, scientists announced they had discovered cyclone-like auroras near the North Pole. Over 600 miles in diameter with multiple arms that rotate counterclockwise, they contain a calm center, or eye, and "rain" electrons into the upper atmosphere.
"[They're] occurring where nobody looked and occurring under conditions where nobody thought anything was happening," said Larry Lyons, who is co-author of a study on the space hurricanes as well as a space physicist at UCLA. "It's just a matter of opening your eyes."
Controllers Evaluating Soyuz After Successful Thruster Test – Space Station
NASA and Roscosmos continue to evaluate an external leak that occurred Dec. 14, from the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft docked to the Rassvet module of the International Space Station . Roscosmos has identified the source of the leak as the external cooling loop of the Soyuz.
South Korea's 1st moon probe Danuri begins to enter lunar orbit | Space
Danuri, South Korea's first deep-space exploration mission, is finally arriving at the moon after a four-month voyage.
The Danuri spacecraft was expected to begin entering lunar orbit at on Friday (Dec. 17) at 2:45 p.m. EST (1945 GMT, 2:45 a.m. Dec. 17 in South Korea), according to a statement (opens in new tab) from the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).
Climate Activist-Scientists Ejected From AGU Conference in Chicago
CHICAGO, Illinois — Two climate scientists say they were kicked out of the world's biggest meeting of the Earth and space sciences on Thursday.
All week at the meeting, scientists had been presenting their latest research on the ways human activities are changing the planet, leading to increasing weather extremes and ecosystem collapse.
