Mars Asteroid Impact Helps to Solve a 'Mega Tsunami' Mystery - CNET

About 3.4 billion years ago, the same thing might've happened on Mars. Fortunately, there were likely no alien dinosaurs around to worry about it.

The analyses focused on a crater, recently dubbed Pohl after the acclaimed science fiction writer Frederick Pohl, in a region known as Chryse Planitia, north of the Martian equator.

Meteorites reveal how they brought space water to Earth | Space

Space rocks that fall to Earth are ancient time capsules, and scientists who merged two imaging techniques may be able to tell us if and how they brought water to Earth.

Meteorites are shards that have broken off of larger objects such as comets or asteroids, and it is thought that asteroids and comets from the outer reaches of the solar system may have left water on nascent Earth after impact.

Mars mega-tsunami may have been caused by asteroid strike, study suggests

A mega-tsunami on Mars may have been caused by an asteroid strike – similar to the one that wiped out land dinosaurs on Earth 66 million years ago – in a shallow ocean region, a new study suggests.

Past research proposed an asteroid or comet impact within an ocean in the Martian northern lowlands may have caused a mega-tsunami approximately 3.4 billion years ago.

Your Stargazing Calendar for December 2022

Uranus will prove tough to see just because of its distance from Earth (about 2.8 trillion miles) and consequent lack of solar illumination. Add a 90-plus-percent illuminated moon to the night sky, and it could be even trickier to get a clear view of Uranus.

But, never fear—Mars is still on offer for folks in North America, during the Red Planet's December 8 occultation. Even with the moon at nearly full illumination, which can wash out part of the planetary view, most of North America and Western Europe can see this event.

Remembering the Arecibo Observatory Dish, Two Years After Its Collapse

The collapse "was an even bigger loss for the island of Puerto Rico, though," Ransom added. "A world-class facility right in their backyard that inspired so many Puerto Ricans that they can also do front-line scientific research."

"The Arecibo telescope was a cultural icon and an inspiration for many young scientists," Pesce added.
