Astronomers have discovered two potentially habitable worlds orbiting a red dwarf star in our cosmic backyard. The extra-solar planets or "exoplanets" are located just 16 light-years away and have masses similar to that of our planet.
"Nature seems bent on showing us that Earth-like planets are very common," study author Alejandro Suárez Mascareño of the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) said in a statement (opens in new tab) .

Alien planet found spiralling to its doom around ageing star | Science-Environment
Astronomers have discovered an exoplanet orbiting an evolved, or older, host star for the first time. The devastated planet seems doomed to spiral toward its developing star, where it will eventually collide and be destroyed. The findings were published in 'The Astrophysical Journal Letters'.
Astronomers find that two exoplanets may be mostly water -- ScienceDaily
A team led by UdeM astronomers has found evidence that two exoplanets orbiting a red dwarf star are "water worlds," planets where water makes up a large fraction of the volume.
The team, led by PhD student Caroline Piaulet of the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets (iREx) at the Université de Montréal, published a detailed study of a planetary system known as Kepler-138 in the journal Nature Astronomy today.
Two Earth-mass exoplanets orbiting nearby star discovered
Now, a group of astronomers led by Alejandro Suárez Mascareño of the University of La Laguna, Spain, reports the finding of two new extrasolar planets as a result of RV measurements of the M-dwarf GJ 1002.
"We studied the nearby M-dwarf GJ 1002 using RVs and activity indicators from ESPRESSO and CARMENES.
Other things going on recently:
Two 'habitable' Earth-like worlds found orbiting star not far from Solar System
Red dwarf stars are small and cool in temperature, and are the most common type of star in our Milky Way galaxy.
Both of the planets are in the habitable zone of their star, where the temperature is at a level that liquid water could exist.
