Hubble WFC3 Spectroscopy of the Terrestrial Planets L~98-59~c \& d: No Evidence for a Clear ...

The nearby bright M-dwarf star L~98-59 has three terrestrial-sized planets. One challenge remaining in characterizing atmospheres around such planets is that it is not known a priori whether they possess any atmospheres.

Here we report the study of the atmospheres of L~98-59~c and L~98-59~d using the near-infrared spectral data from the G141 grism of HST/WFC3. We can reject the hypothesis of a clear atmosphere dominated by hydrogen and helium at a confidence level of ∼ 3~sigma for both planets.

ATLANTIC SKIES: Catch them all, if you can — two unique celestial events close out the year | ...

Perhaps it's the lack of any snow on the ground and the relatively mild daytime temperatures that make it still seem more like autumn than winter.

Be that as it may, as 2022 comes to an end, it goes out in style.

The first solar system object we will observe is the sun, or, rather, the setting sun. It sets at around 4:30 p.m. AST on Dec. 26 and by 4:35 p.m. AST on the 31st. The waning moon will be visible in the night sky this coming week, rising around 10:55 a.m. AST and setting by 8:30 p.m.
