Sony says it has technology for humanoid robots, needs to find usage | Reuters

"In terms of technology, several companies in the world including this one have enough technology accumulated to make them swiftly once it becomes clear which usage is promising," Sony Chief Technology Officer Hiroaki Kitano told Reuters in an interview.

"We will make an investment (for manufacturing) only when such investment is deemed necessary. We see a potential in humanoid robots, but we also believe other forms of robots are quite important as well."

Can robots co-exist with humans?

Starting next year, the researchers plan to deploy two autonomous robots on UT Austin's campus. S tudents and professors will be able to order free supplies such as wipes and hand sanitizer via a smartphone app, and the robots will deliver door-to-door on campus.

"This study that we're performing is great timing because it's happening before commercially successful, large-scale deployment," said Luis Sentis, a professor at UT Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering and the leader of the project. "[W]e're trying to be anticipatory and ahead of the markets.

People have been asking that question for an astonishingly long time.

At the level of the economy as a whole, the verdict is clear: So far, machines haven't done away with the need for workers. U.S. workers are almost five times as productive as they were in the early postwar years, but there has been no long-term upward trend in unemployment:

Automated robots allow easy delivery on TU campus

The robots were given a soft launch on campus two weeks ago. Now, the robots are a common sight around campus.

"TU is a STEM-heavy big focus institution, and we are always looking at what's high-tech, what's new," said TU Vice President Matt Warren.

Here's how it works: you place an order through the Starship app. When the delivery arrives, you grab your items and send the robot on its way.

Point-counterpoint: Starship robots · The Badger Herald

We have all seen them — the creepy, white, bug-like robots that roll around campus from dorm to dorm, getting in the way of students on their way to classes throughout their trips. Some think they are "cute" or "efficient." But au contraire.

In economic terms, there are more negative externalities than positive externalities when it comes to these contraptions. In other words, THEY CAUSE MORE HARM THAN GOOD. For a Starshit trip to be successful, there must be perfect weather, no traffic and a short distance to travel.
