The top spaceflight stories of 2022 went across the solar system | Space

An international conflict threw out Russia, one of the top spaceflight contributors since the dawn of the space age, from most international partnerships. A NASA mission brought a human-rated spacecraft around the moon and back again.

We've picked out 12 of the top stories in spaceflight below that helped define 2022, with news flowing from multiple worlds across the solar system.

Impact History of Earth-Moon System | Science Mission Directorate

The Moon's surface contains a complete record of the impact history of the inner solar system that stretches back to the formation of the Earth-Moon system, unlike the Earth, where rocks are recycled through plate tectonics or weathered away by fluvial and aeolian processes.

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured this breathtaking image of Earth as it was orbiting the Moon. This is a composite image from a series of pictures taken October 12, 2015, when the spacecraft was approximately 134 km above the lunar crater, Compton.

The Universe is Brighter Than we Thought - Universe Today

Over seven years ago, the New Horizons mission made history when it became the first spacecraft to conduct a flyby of Pluto . In the leadup to this encounter, the spacecraft provided updated data and images of many objects in the inner and outer Solar System.

Now that it is passing through the Kuiper Belt, away from the light pollution of the inner Solar System, it has another lucrative mission: measuring the brightness of the Universe.

Lunar Discovery and Exploration | Science Mission Directorate

On June 10th, 2011, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) captured this striking image of the Tycho crater. The crater is in the southern lunar highlands and is approximately 82km in diameter.

In the Science Mission Directorate (SMD), the Exploration Science Strategy Integration Office (ESSIO) ensures science is infused into all aspects of lunar exploration.

A deep dive into the Neptune system with JWST | The Planetary Society

On Sep. 21, 2022, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) turned its golden mirrors toward the ice giant Neptune . This planet, like its fraternal twin Uranus , is one of the least explored planets in our Solar System, only briefly visited by Voyager 2 in 1989.

We know so little about ice giants that studies of the Neptune system are largely in the realm of pure scientific discovery. Each new thing we learn about Neptune makes a huge contribution to our understanding of it.

Platform to Study the Universe | Science Mission Directorate

The far side of the lunar surface is captured here like never before. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Wide Angle Camera (WAC) captured this mosaic in monochrome mode. This pieced together photo was the first of its kind as a resource to the scientific community.

The Moon also serves as a platform for understanding the rest of the Universe. The lack of an atmosphere allows the full electromagnetic spectrum to be visible from the lunar surface.
