Ancient Asteroid Provides Insight Into the Evolution of Our Solar System

By Diamond Light Source January 27, 2023 Asteroid Ryugu – Image taken at 20km on 26 June 2018, diameter 870 m. Credit: Hayabusa2/JAXA

The data collected at Diamond contributed to a wider study of the space weathering signatures on the asteroid. The pristine asteroid samples enabled the collaborators to explore how space weathering can alter the physical and chemical composition of the surface of carbonaceous asteroids like ...

Ryugu asteroid providing window into the early days of our solar system - Study Finds

LOS ANGELES — The Ryugu asteroid is giving astronomers new insight into how the solar system looked like when it first formed.

Our solar system is approximately 4.57 billion years-old. Astronomers in the current study used a technique called isotopic analysis to identify differences in the mass of chemical elements within organic and inorganic compounds.

NASA Webb Telescope Zooms in on One of Solar System's Oddest Objects - CNET

Scientists using NASA's new James Webb Space Telescope say they've been able to get a closer look at an asteroid that also hosts just the fifth ring system to be discovered in our solar system (the others circle Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune).

In October 2022, Pablo Santos-Sanz, from Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía in Spain, used Webb to watch Chariklo occult a star once again.

Solar System 'Detectives' Search For Clues in 'Crumbs' Left Over From The ...

A magnifying glass just won’t cut it for the high-tech “detectives” at the University of Arizona Kuiper Materials Imaging and Characterization Facility.

The scientists, who can be found in the basement of the university’s Kuiper Space Sciences Building, are working to decode the stories archived in rocks and dust left over from the earliest days of the solar system.

Two Earth-like worlds discovered outside Solar System. They could be habitable - India Today

By India Today Web Desk : With astronomy reaching the far end of the universe and trying to look at the moments just after the big bang, the catalogue of worlds beyond our solar system is continuously growing.

GJ 1002 b and c lie at a perfect distance from their star, which could allow liquid water to form on a planet's surface if it has the right kind of atmosphere. This zone known as the habitable zone, just like Earth is in from the Sun, has made astronomers more excited about this new discovery.

Green comet zooming our way, last visited 50,000 years ago

The dirty snowball last visited during Neanderthal times, according to NASA. It will come within 26 million miles (42 million kilometers) of Earth Wednesday before speeding away again, unlikely to return for millions of years.

Discovered less than a year ago, this harmless green comet already is visible in the northern night sky with binoculars and small telescopes, and possibly the naked eye in the darkest corners of the Northern Hemisphere.

This rocket engine could save fuel on the long trip to Mars | Space

This futuristic engine could save lots of propellant on interplanetary journeys, perhaps allowing NASA to explore the solar system more efficiently.

NASA completed a round of testing last year with the "rotating detonation rocket engine," which generates thrust using fuel-saving supersonic combustion, agency officials wrote (opens in new tab) in an update on Wednesday (Jan. 25).
