'M3GAN' Makes Us Ask (Again): Who's Afraid of Dancing Robots? - The New York Times

M3GAN isn't a born mover. The robot doll at the center of the film "M3GAN" starts out stiff-limbed and jerky, prone to sharp, birdlike tilts of the head — C3PO, if he were styled by the toymaker Madame Alexander.

But once M3GAN, short for Model 3 Generative Android, discovers more about what it means to be a person, her movements begin to smooth out. In a montage, we see the robot learn a simple TikTok-style dance alongside the young girl she is programmed to befriend and protect.

Stowing Is a "Beautiful Problem" that Amazon is Solving with Robots - IEEE Spectrum

When we hear about manipulation robots in warehouses, it's almost always in the context of picking . That is, about grasping a single item from a bin of items, and then dropping that item into a different bin, where it may go toward building a customer order.

Amazon has been on a path toward the kind of robots that can pick items since at least 2015, when the company sponsored the Amazon Picking Challenge at ICRA .

Teaching old robots new tricks

Robots, and in particular industrial robots, are programmed to perform certain functions. The Robot Operating System (ROS) is a very popular framework that facilitates the asynchronous coordination between a robot and other drives and/or devices.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) and the ROS-I community often develop applications in ROS 2 , the successor to ROS 1.

Helping robots learn: GPT-3 tool descriptions add value - TechHQ

Programming puzzle: teaching robots how to use new tools could become easier thanks to large language models such as GPT-3. Image credit: Shutterstock.

The jury is still out on whether talking to plants helps them grow, but machines are definitely becoming more responsive to human language. Robots, in particular, can benefit from natural-sounding text generated by large language models such as GPT-3.
