The discovery: Two planets about as massive as Earth orbit a red-dwarf star only 16 light-years away – nearby in astronomical terms.

The James Webb Telescope detected the coldest ice in the known universe – and it contains ...

Molecular clouds, made up of frozen molecules, gasses and dust particles, serve as the birthplace of stars and planets — including habitable planets, like ours.

Within the dark, cold cloud, the team identified frozen molecules like carbonyl sulfur, ammonia, methane, methanol and more. These molecules will someday be a part of the hot core of a growing star, and possibly part of future exoplanets, according to the researchers.

In 1990, at the behest of Carl Sagan, the Voyager mission took a photo of Earth from 3.7 billion miles away (image at left). The next challenge is to take a similar image of an Earth-like planet orbiting another star.

Planets are much dimmer than stars and typically light from nearby stars must be suppressed to image them. Broadly speaking, instruments that suppress starlight inside the telescope are called coronagraphs and those that do it externally are called starshades.

See the moon meet up with Jupiter tonight (Jan. 25) | Space

On Wednesday (Jan. 25) the moon will meet up with the solar system's largest planet Jupiter in the night sky. The two astronomical objects will share the same right ascension in the sky in an arrangement that astronomers call a "conjunction.

According to In-the-Sky (opens in new tab) , the 5-day-old waxing crescent moon will pass less than 2 degrees to the south of Jupiter during the conjunction while the two objects will be in the constellation of Pisces .

Tidal Distortions As A Bottleneck On Constraining Exoplanet Compositions - Astrobiology

Improvements in the number of confirmed planets and the precision of observations imply a need to better understand subtle effects that may bias interpretations of exoplanet observations.

One such effect is the distortion of a short period planet by its host star, affecting its derived density. We extend the work of Burton et al., Correia, and others, using a gravitational potential formulation to a sample of nearly 200 planets with periods less than 3 days.

2023 Retrograde Dates: Your Planetary Guide

You might have heard about Mercury retrograde and how it impacts our day-to-day, from causing miscommunication with our loved ones to throwing a wrench in our travel itineraries.

Generally, every planet in our solar system will enter a retrograde period at some point each year, though not at the same time every year. The planets all have different orbits, so it takes a different amount of time to complete their cycle around the sun.
