NASA Wants You to Help Study Planets Around Other Stars

Members of the public can help astronomers observe and study the night sky through NASA's Universe of Learning Exoplanet Watch program.

The Exoplanet Watch project invites you to use your smartphone or personal telescope to help track worlds outside our solar system.

Astronomers find 2nd Earth-size planet in intriguing alien solar system | Space

NASA's leading planet-hunting spacecraft has spotted its second planet that matches Earth's size and may be able to retain liquid water — and both worlds orbit the same star.

NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite ( TESS ) launched in April 2018; since then, the mission has discovered 285 confirmed exoplanets and more than 6,000 candidates.

Second Earth-sized World Found in System's Habitable Zone – Exoplanet Exploration: Planets Beyond ...

Using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite , scientists have identified an Earth-size world, called TOI 700 e, orbiting within the habitable zone of its star – the range of distances where liquid water could occur on a planet’s surface.

Astronomers previously discovered three planets in this system, called TOI 700 b, c, and d. Planet d also orbits in the habitable zone. But scientists needed an additional year of TESS observations to discover TOI 700 e.

The Abundance of Belatedly Habitable Planets And Ambiguities In Definitions Of The Continuously ...

However, definitions of the CHZ vary in the literature and often conflict with each other.

For instance, older M stars are either excellent or sub-optimal hosts for CHZ planets, depending on whether one’s definition of habitability prioritizes the total time spent in the habitable zone or the continuity of habitable conditions from the delivery of volatiles to its current age.

Redox State And Interior Structure Control On The Long-term Habitability Of Stagnant-lid Planets - ...

On terrestrial planets, volcanic outgassing is a significant source of atmospheric and surface water and a major contributor to the long-term evolution of the atmosphere.

We present the results of a comprehensive 1D model of the coupled evolution of the interior and atmosphere of rocky exoplanets that combines central feedback processes between these two reservoirs.

Researchers develop AI method for mapping planets

"We were interested in designing a simple, out-of-the-box tool that can be customized and used by many," said Giacomo Nodjoumi. The Ph.D. candidate in the research group of Angelo Rossi, Professor of Earth and Planetary Science at Constructor University, was key to developing "DeepLandforms.

The scientists demonstrated the results that can be achieved with the help of the software for planetary mapping with a specific landform on Mars, which resembles lava tubes on Earth.

Interesting Engineering | First Satellites To Reach Outer Planets

Satellites have been an integral part of man's quest to learn more about our world, and beyond what we can see. Between 1965 and 1968, Pioneers 6-9, managed by NASA's Ames Research Center's Pioneer Project Office, were launched into solar orbit.

Its successor, Pioneer 11, the first spacecraft to study Saturn, has a more curious tale. The motion of the Earth pushed it out of range of the spacecraft's antenna, rendering it unable to turn to face Earth.

A Clearer View of Exoplanets With Starshade

Since the first confirmed discovery of planets beyond our solar system in 1993, astronomers have discovered 4,360 extrasolar planets — aka exoplanets — orbiting in 3,223 planetary systems, per the Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia .

Strangely enough, though, as the Planetary Society notes, we have only actually seen a relative handful of these distant worlds. At latest count, 51 exoplanet discoveries have been made by direct detection — scarcely more than 1% of all discoveries, according to NASA .
