Back in December of 2020, evening sky planets Jupiter and Saturn appeared to pass historically close to one another.
The solar system's two largest planets could both be covered by a fingertip held at arm's length on the evening of December 21, 2020. Lots of folks were outside that evening looking at the pair and social media was flooded with photos of the rare close pairing.
See A Jaw-Dropping Jupiter, Venus And Crescent Moon Encounter: The Night Sky This Week
This week's main attraction is a dance of the two brightest planets of all, Jupiter and Venus, low on the western horizon right after dark.
Today our satellite is directly between the Sun and the Earth. It's invisible because it's both lost in the Sun's glare and because its illuminated side is facing away from us.
The Day and Year Length of Every Planet in Our Solar System
These kinds of questions are fun to ponder as you consider the various lengths of days and years for all the other planets in our solar system .
You might be surprised to find out just how vastly different the other planets' ratios of day length to year length are when compared to Earth's. In other words, not every planet spins on its axis at a much faster rate than it spins around the sun.
What If There Was A Super Earth Sandwiched Between Mars And Jupiter?
Ever wondered what our solar system might be like with an earthlike planet —- or one even five or six times larger —- orbiting between Mars and Jupiter?
As Kane notes in his paper, there would be gradual increases in the orbital eccentricities of both Earth and Venus. This would lead to catastrophic close encounters between the two planets within a time frame of only eight to nine million years.
