NASA's Quantum Detector Achieves World-Leading Milestone

This close-up photograph shows an exquisitely sensitive single Performance-Enhanced Array for Counting Optical Quanta (PEACOQ) detector, which is being developed at JPL to detect single photons – quantum particles of light – at an extremely high rate.

This photograph shows several PEACOQ detectors shortly after they'd been printed on a silicon wafer. The inset image shows the detail of a single PEACOQ. Each PEACOQ detector is a little smaller than a dime.
