New Studies Show NASA’s Asteroid Crash Test Was Highly Successful

Several new studies confirm the success of a test by the American space agency NASA to crash a spacecraft into an asteroid .

The studies suggest the experiment was an important first step in learning how spacecraft might be able to protect Earth from asteroids or other space objects that might threaten the planet.

NASA's DART: How 'regular' folks - not astronomers - captured the impact

Now, according to a recent press release, their names are being honored in a paper published in Nature.

NASA's first test mission for planetary defense, DART, which seeks to test and validate a method to protect Earth in case of an asteroid strike, reached Dimorphos, a moon of the near-Earth asteroid Didymos on September 26, 2022.

Asteroid that could hit Earth in 2046 detected - India Today

By India Today Science Desk : Earth has been subjected to several big hits in its ancient past, one of them being so massive that it led to instant doom, wiping out almost all plant and animal species from the planet.

This has made asteroid tracking critical for planetary defense and astronomers have now spotted one such rock floating in deep space that could be on a trajectory to hit the planet. Dubbed 2023 DW, the asteroid has a small chance of impacting the planet based on initial analysis.

Asteroid headed toward Earth may arrive on Valentine's Day 2046 - Nasa - BBC News

A newly detected asteroid has a very small chance of impacting the Earth in 2046, Nasa tweeted on Tuesday.

The closest the asteroid is expected to get to Earth is about 1.1 million miles (1.8m km), Nasa says.

The asteroid, dubbed 2023 DW, has about a 1 in 560 chance of hitting Earth, according to Nasa. It's the only space rock on Nasa's risk list that ranks a 1 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale.

NASA tracks a newly discovered asteroid that has a 'small chance' of hitting Earth in 2046

In 2022, NASA tested humanity's ability to knock an asteroid off-course as part of the DART mission. And it didn't go quite as expected.

A newly discovered asteroid roughly the size of an Olympic swimming pool has a "small chance" of colliding with Earth in 23 years, with a potential impact on Valentine's Day in 2046, according to NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office.
