Five years ago, police in the Netherlands caught members of Russia's GRU military intelligence red-handed as they tried to hack the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague.

Since then, surprisingly, Serebriakov has only risen in status. This week, Western intelligence sources told WIRED that Serebriakov is now the new leader of one of the world's most aggressive hacking units.

Over the course of the past year, researchers at Google's Mandiant division have uncovered hacks of systems that are not typically the targets of cyber espionage, according to The Wall Street Journal, with hackers using techniques that evade common cybersecurity tools and detection.

Chinese Hackers Exploit Fortinet Zero-Day Flaw for Cyber Espionage Attack

The Google-owned threat intelligence and incident response firm is tracking the malicious operation under its uncategorized moniker UNC3886 , a China-nexus threat actor.

"UNC3886 is an advanced cyber espionage group with unique capabilities in how they operate on-network as well as the tools they utilize in their campaigns," Mandiant researchers said in a technical analysis.

Minneapolis Public Schools says hackers released personal data | kare11.com

MINNEAPOLIS — Weeks after Minneapolis Public Schools first reported an "encryption" event targeted the district's systems, MPS says online "threat actors" have now released personal data that was accessed during the breach.

In an update posted on the district's website , MPS said the data was released on the "dark web, a part of the internet accessible only with special software that allows users to remain untraceable."
