HELSINKI — China has selected near-Earth object 2019 VL5 for a combined asteroid deflection and observation test to launch 2025.
The mission will use a Long March 3B rocket and carry both an impactor and observer spacecraft, according to a presentation by Chen Qi from China's Deep Space Exploration Laboratory at the 8th IAA Planetary Defense Conference in Vienna, Austria, last week.
China Will Smash a Spacecraft Into This Near-Earth Asteroid in Planetary Defence Test
China has selected a small, near-Earth asteroid as the target for an upcoming mission that will help it prepare against future threats of incoming space rocks.
The mission is targeting asteroid 2019 VL5 , a small object that's about 108 feet (33 meters) in diameter and orbits the Sun every 365 days, bringing it in close proximity to Earth.
NASA reveals Asteroid 2023 GG approaching Earth at breakneck speed | Tech News
Though most asteroids are found in a ring between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter, called the asteroid belt, that doesn't mean they've never come close to Earth. In fact, some large space rocks have made their way towards Earth in the past and impacted the surface.
According to NASA, the Asteroid 2023 GG belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids which are a group of near-Earth asteroids named after the humongous 1862 Apollo asteroid, discovered by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth in the 1930s.
