On a Florida morning, a monumental event is set to unfold as Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket prepares to launch a NASA mission to Mars. Scheduled for Sunday, November 9, during a 2. 5-hour window commencing at 2:45 p. m. EDT, the partially reusable rocket will carry the ESCAPADE Mars probes into space. The ESCAPADE mission, an $80 million endeavor, comprises two spacecraft - Blue and Gold - named after the school colors of the University of California, Berkeley, which will operate the mission for NASA. Built by Rocket Lab, these probes are designed to study space weather.
The launch will mark the second-ever for New Glenn, a powerful rocket developed by Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos. Following liftoff from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, the New Glenn rocket will propel Blue and Gold toward the Earth-sun Lagrange Point 2, a gravitationally stable location approximately 930,000 miles beyond Earth. For 12 months, the pair will reside there, poised to embark on an intricate journey.
Their trajectory will involve looping back to Earth in November 2026, where they'll receive a gravitational boost, and then head towards Mars, expected to be reached about 10 ← →
