US-Russian Crew Launches To International Space Station

In a remarkable display of international cooperation, a US-Russian crew of three embarked on a mission to the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The successful launch took place at 2:27 pm local time from the Russia-leased Baikonur launch facility in Kazakhstan, with a Soyuz booster rocket propelling the Soyuz MS-28 into orbit.

NASA astronaut Chris Williams, a physicist, and two Russian crewmates, Sergei Mikaev, a military pilot, and Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, formed the crew that would undertake this extraordinary journey. Notably, this marked the first spaceflight for Williams and Mikaev, while Kud-Sverchkov was on his second flight. The spacecraft was scheduled to dock at the station approximately three hours after liftoff, and the trio was expected to spend about eight months at the orbiting outpost.

Upon arrival, they would join an international team of astronauts and cosmonauts, including NASA astronauts Mike Fincke, Zena Cardman, and Jonny Kim, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Russian cosmonauts Sergei Ryzhikov, Alexei Zubritsky, and Oleg Platonov.
