Vast Space's ambitious endeavor to establish the first commercially operated habitable space outpost is edging closer to reality. The company recently achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of its Haven Demo satellite aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket. This demonstration satellite is designed to test crucial technologies, including propulsion, flight computers, and navigation systems, essential for the development of Haven-1, Vast Space's planned space station.
The Haven Demo satellite's solar array deployment was captured on film several hours after launch, showcasing the company's progress. According to Digital Trends, this achievement marks a crucial step towards establishing a privately operated space station. NASA is currently seeking a replacement for the aging International Space Station (ISS), which is slated for decommissioning around 2030 due to its outdated hardware and high maintenance costs.
Rather than funding the replacement itself, NASA plans to select the best designs from commercial organizations, with Vast Space among the contenders. The space agency intends to purchase "station services" from the chosen provider(s), which will host astronauts for extended periods and facilitate scientific research in microgravity conditions.
Vast Space is competing with other prominent firms, including Axiom Space, Blue Origin, Starlab Space, Northrop Grumman, Sierra Space, and SpaceX.
