China's Chang'e 5 is orbiting the moon! | Space | EarthSky

China’s robotic Chang’e 5 will be the 1st sample-return from the moon since the 1970s. It launched successfully last week atop a Chinese Long March 5 rocket. Now it’s reported to have entered orbit around the moon.

At 20:58 on November 28, the Chang’e-5 probe flew to the moon for about 112 hours and successfully ignited a 3000 N engine at a distance of 400 kilometers [248 miles] from the lunar surface. About 17 minutes later, the engine shut down normally. According to the monitoring and judgment of real-time telemetry data, the Chang’e-5 probe braked normally in recent months and entered the orbit around the moon smoothly.

Now, as a new initiative by the European Space Agency suggests, cleaning up that trash is going to be a complicated and apparently very, very costly task.

ISRO and Russian satellites barely miss collision; how dangerous is this?

India's Cartosat 2F weighing over 700kg dangerously approached the Kanopus-V spacecraft at 1.49 UTC, on Friday, according to the Russian Space Agency. In a tweet, Roscosmos has said that the minimum distance between both Russian and foreign satellite was 224 meters. Both satellites are meant for Earth's remote sensing.

According to a source that spoke to Zee Media, 1 kilometer is an ideal distance between satellites in orbit, whereas 224 meters is scary and can be counted as a near miss. Generally, when two satellites are predicted (based on calculations) to make a close pass, a decision is taken to manoeuvre one of them away in advance(usually days ahead).

ESA signs 102 million dollar deal with Swiss startup to bring back space junk- Technology News,

The European Space Agency (ESA) has signed a 86 million-euro ($102 million) contract with ClearSpace SA to bring a large piece of orbital trash back to Earth. ClearSpace is a Swiss startup that provides in-orbit servicing and space debris removal and was selected by ESA in 2019 for this mission. Clearspace-1 will launch in 2025.

Defunct man-made objects that are orbiting in space, particularly in Earth's orbit are called space debris. It can consist of natural debris from meteoroids as well. NASA estimated that there are more than 20,000 pieces of debris larger than a softball that are currently orbiting the Earth. It will only continue to build as the commercial space industry grows and more rockets are launched to orbit and deep space.

NASA shares visual of stellar-mass black hole's 'superluminal ejection' in space

On November 27, NASA shared a time-lapse footage of a stellar-mass black hole, about eight times the mass of the Sun, drifting away from its orbiting companion star and carrying out superluminal ejection in space. The outburst activity was occurring at 80 percent the speed of light, according to astronomers. Dubbed as the MAXI J1820+070, the black hole X-ray binary was discovered by the AstroSat spacecraft and its galactic flare-up was captured by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory.

"The companion star orbiting the black hole has about half the mass of the Sun. The black hole's strong gravity pulls material away from the companion star into an X-ray emitting disk surrounding the black hole," the Space Administration said.

If we had a "Physics paper title of the year award", the 2020 winner would surely have to be " The arches of chaos in the solar system ", which was published this week in Science Advances by Nataša Todorović, Di Wu and Aaron Rosengren. In their paper, the trio "reveal a notable and hitherto undetected ornamental structure of manifolds, connected in a series of arches that spread from the asteroid belt to Uranus and beyond".

The paper is beautifully written, describing the manifolds as "a true celestial autobahn," and going on to say that they "enable 'Le Petit Prince' grand tour of the solar system". And if that has not piqued your curiosity, the figures are wonderful as well – with the above image being "Jovian-minimum-distance maps for the Greek and Trojan orbital configurations".

Our solar system's gas giants are about to do something that hasn't been seen for 800 years -

An extremely rare chance to see a stunning planetary alignment will present itself to stargazers this Christmas.

The two gas giants of Jupiter and Saturn - the largest two planets in our solar system - will appear closer together in the night sky than they have in almost 800 years.

Patrick Hartigan, an astronomer at Rice University, said: "Alignments between these two planets are rather rare, occurring once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is exceptionally rare because of how close the planets will appear to one another.

Bad Astronomy | Simulations of the solar system's future show how the planets get ejected by

Mind you, this is all true, but that's not really what happens to the solar system , just the Sun and first three planets (one of which we have a vested interest in). But there's other stuff out there too, including Mars and four giant planets. They count too. Heck, Jupiter by itself has more mass than everything else in the solar system (except the Sun, duh) combined, so its fate is very important.

Japan spacecraft carrying asteroid soil samples nears home

TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese spacecraft is nearing Earth after a yearlong journey home from a distant asteroid with soil samples and data that could provide clues to the origins of the solar system, a space agency official said Friday.

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft left the asteroid Ryugu, about 300 million kilometers (180 million miles) from Earth, a year ago and is expected to reach Earth and drop a capsule containing the precious samples in southern Australia on Dec. 6.

New Evidence: There Was Another Planet in the Solar System That Escaped

According to team of scientists at the Carnegie Institution for Science, an additional planet located between Saturn and Uranus got flung out of the solar system while it was still in its infancy.

The theory goes that the Sun was once surrounded by a disk of gas and dust. Through countless collisions, planets started to form, orbiting our star at a relatively short distance.

The more massive planets then kicked off a series of gravitational interactions, causing the planets to reshuffle into their current arrangement.

Jupiter, Saturn to form a ‘double planet’ before Christmas - Deseret News

Jupiter and Saturn will align in December to create a seemingly "double planet" in the night sky — and it's going to happen just before Christmas.

Popular Mechanics reports that Jupiter and Saturn will align for the first time in centuries. In fact, the two planets haven't been this close since the Middle Ages.

The two planets will align after sunset in the Northern Hemisphere. Saturn and Jupiter will appear together in the southwestern part of the sky, according to Yahoo! Finance.

Faint 'super-planet' discovered by radio telescope for the 1st time | Space

Scientists have discovered a cold, faint "super-planet" that has remained elusive to traditional infrared survey methods.

Observations from the Low-Frequency Array, or LOFAR radio telescope, revealed a brown dwarf, which researchers have designated BDR J1750+3809 and nicknamed Elegast. Brown dwarfs are sometimes referred to as failed stars or super-planets because they are too small to be considered stars, yet too big to be considered planets.

Solar Winds and the Planets

The mass in the solar winds is made of plasma, the fourth state of matter. Plasma occurs when atoms have so much energy they separate into protons, electrons, and helium nuclei. This plasma originates in the Sun's atmosphere.

The Sun's atmosphere is divided into two layers: chromosphere and corona. Above the opaque photosphere or the surface of the sun is the chromosphere layer, which is a few thousand kilometers thick. The temperature increases with height here reaching about 10,000° at the top of the chromosphere. Fibrous jets known as spicules appear and travel through the photosphere in about 10 minutes, carrying plasma to higher altitudes.

Bizarre molten planet discovered with lava ocean, supersonic winds

Scientists say they have possibly identified a lava world so dramatic that it might boast a thin regional atmosphere of vaporized rock where it is closest to its star.

That exoplanet is called K2-141b and was originally discovered in 2017. The world is about half again as big as Earth but orbits so close to its star, which is one class smaller than our own, that it completes several loops each Earth-day with the same surface permanently facing the star.

"All rocky planets­, including Earth, started off as molten worlds but then rapidly cooled and solidified," Nicolas Cowan, a planetary scientist at McGill University in Canada and a coauthor on the new paper, said in a statement . "Lava planets give us a rare glimpse at this stage of planetary evolution."

Hackers could steal a Tesla Model X in minutes, security researchers say - The Washington Post

SAN FRANCISCO — Tesla's Internet-connected cars can receive new features and safety updates over the air, one of the key conveniences of the fully electric fleet. But the cars' connectedness can pose a risk, too, security researchers say.

Case in point: Belgian researchers found they could hack and steal a Tesla Model X SUV in a matter of minutes through a Bluetooth-connected key fob. They said that forced Tesla to push out a fix.

It was the latest security experiment from the COSIC, a research group of Imec and the University of Leuven in Belgium, which had previously found a similar vulnerability with Tesla's Model S luxury sedan, where a key fob was also to blame.

Here Are The Navy Pilot Reports From Encounters With Mysterious Aircraft Off The East Coast

The War Zone obtained the eight hazard reports, all of which are marked "Unclassified" and "For Official Use Only," via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Naval Safety Center. Seven of them involve F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and occurred at various times between 2013 and 2014 in a patch of airspace off the coast of Virginia and North Carolina known as the W-72 warning area.

The FOIA officer handling our request said that these were the only eight reports in the Web-Enabled Safety System (WESS) Aviation Mishap and Hazard Reporting System (WAMHRS) to deal with naval aviation encounters with unidentified objects, balloons, and any other similar objects anywhere. WAMHRS is a centralized computer database that is supposed to contain all such hazard and flight incident reports that Navy aviation units file with the Naval Safety Center.

How Skinwalker Ranch Became a Hotbed of Paranormal Activity - HISTORY

Bizarre videos and pictures that start conversations on UFOs and Aliens have become a regular affair in the past few years. While some of these viral content is actually worth researching, most of them turn out to be hoaxes for garnering likes and shares on social media.

And as humans are experiencing record job losses and economic uncertainty, robots have become a hot commodity. Multiple technology manufacturers have reported increased demand for their bots over the course of the pandemic, from drone-like machines that can roam hallways to make deliveries and AI-powered customer service software to increased use of self-service checkouts at supermarkets.

"The cost [of automation] is coming down, the technology is getting better and we are seeing innovation working effectively in other parts of the world that we can transfer here," Swidler said, citing Alibaba's FlyZoo hotel that is staffed nearly entirely by technology, from check-in to room service.

Chris Conway from the supermarket chain said more customers who had never ordered online before were now using the service.

The robots will serve the Wootton Fields store, travelling up to three miles (5km) to customers' homes.

The Co-op said, due to the coronavirus pandemic, demand for the service had tripled in Milton Keynes in recent months.

Recycling robotics company AMP Robotics could raise up to $70M – TechCrunch

AMP Robotics , the recycling robotics technology developer backed by investors including Sequoia Capital and Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners , is close to closing on as much as $70 million in new financing, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the company’s plans.

Earlier this month the company announced a new deal that represented its largest purchase order for its trash-sorting and recycling robots.

That comes on the back of a pilot program earlier in the year with one Toronto apartment complex, where the complex’s tenants were able to opt into a program that would share with the building’s renters recycling habits monitored by AMP Robotics in an effort to improve their recycling behavior.
