NASA's Curiosity Rover Finds Unexplained Oxygen on Mars - Scientific American

NASA’s Curiosity rover, for three Martian years—nearly six years to us Earthlings—has been sniffing the air above Mars’ Gale Crater, its near-equatorial exploration site. Using its Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) portable chemistry lab, the rover has ascertained not only what the surface atmosphere is made of, but also how its gases change with the seasons.

Many of Mars’ gases “are very well behaved,” says Melissa Trainer, a planetary scientist at NASA and a team member on the SAM experiment. One, however, appears to be behaving in a decidedly unexpected and altogether bizarre manner: oxygen.

Historic climate change on Mars might be detectable

The team—led by Dr. Nicholas Attree—say the findings of their research, which involved hypothetical modeling, could help to understand similar historical events on Earth, where historical climate changes are already being traced in borehole temperature measurements.

Dr. Attree and Stirling colleague Dr. Axel Hagermann are working on NASA's InSight mission, which landed on the Red Planet last November. The scientists are simulating data obtained by the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Probe (HP3), an instrument provided by the German Institute of Planetary Research in Berlin. Dr. Attree used numerical models to estimate the effect that historic freak climate changes might have on the heat flow measurements.

NASA's InSight Mission --"May Detect Past Climate Change Events on Mars" | The

Now, according to a new University of Stirling study , more subtle examples of extreme climate change on Mars could be detected through the measurement of subsurface temperatures. Scientists in Stirling’s Planetary Ices Laboratory believe that the technology used by the heat flow probe on the latest NASA mission to Mars might be able to identify “major” climate change events of the past.

Screening Soon: 'The Pathfinders' Trains Lens on Mars – NASA's Mars Exploration Program

The era NASA called "Faster, Better, Cheaper" started with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory agreeing to land something on Mars — cheaply — and to do it in a radically different way. The documentary film "The Pathfinders" tells the story of how a small group of JPLers rose to the challenge, ignoring warnings that attempting to land a spacecraft on Mars with airbags wouldn't likely be a career-enhancing move.

Caltech's Beckman Auditorium in Pasadena will host the documentary's screening on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. It is the first of four documentaries about JPL missions to the Red Planet preceding the much-anticipated launch of the Mars 2020 rover next summer.
